What is SSL?

SSL Certificates enable data encryption on the internet and allows data to be transmitted securely from a web server to a browser. With SSL, your website can use the https protocol and will display a padlock to end users web browsers to indicate the connection is secure.

Although all SSL certificates use similar methods to protect and validate your data, the level of trust and assertion they provide varies. Standard SSL (Domain Validated) Certificates are the easiest and most common type of SSL certificate. OV and EV Certificates also authenticate the identity of the company or organization that holds the certificate providing more trust to end users.

EV Certificates offer the highest level of validation and trust, and will show the name of the company or organization in green in the address bar. This is an immediate, visual way that viewers can know that extra steps were taken to confirm the site they’re visiting – which is why most large companies and organizations choose EV certificates.

FAQ

What are the different types of SSL?2018-04-21T17:34:40+00:00

There are 3 different levels of vetting that SSL Certificates are based upon. Domain Validation (DV) , Organization Validation (OV), and Extended Validation (EV). The major difference between the types of certificate relates to the information the Certificate Authority, Comodo, requires and validates in order to issue a certificate. The higher levels of certificate require more information, and often is displayed in the browser bar. EV SSL for example turns the browser bar green and displays the organization name to visitors to generate more trust.

There are also three types of SSL per level. Standard, Wildcard and Multi-Domain.
Find about about each type below.

What is a Standard SSL?2018-03-28T17:40:30+00:00

A Standard SSL Certificate will give one single domain full protection. These SSL are the cheapest available in each level due to only covering one Domain per SSL Certificate. Standard SSLs also cover your domain with or without www.

For example, a Standard SSL will cover your domain if entered as
yourdomain.co.uk or www.yourdomain.co.uk

What is a Wildcard SSL?2018-04-21T17:35:29+00:00

A single Wildcard Certificate can be shared with unlimited level one Sub Domains. Meaning you can secure all your Sub Domains without buying multiple SSLs.

For example, a Wildcard SSL would cover not just yourdomain.co.uk but also:

blog.yourdomain.co.uk
shop.yourdomain.co.uk
anything.yourdomain.co.uk

What is a Multi-Domain SSL?2018-04-21T17:36:29+00:00

A Multi-Domain SSL can be shared with upto 97 of your domain names. Using a Multi-Domain SSL will save you buying a SSL for each individual domain saving you money. All our Multi-Domain SSL includes 3 Domains as standard with each domain there after having a small charge saving you around £10 per domain.

For example, a Multi-Domain SSL would cover not just yourdomain.co.uk but also:

yourdomain.com
yourdomain.org
otherdomain.co.uk

Each Domain can also include one Sub-Domain covered by the SSL.

Why do I need an SSL Certificate?2018-03-28T15:37:27+00:00
